Animal Products play an important role in the socio-economic life of India. It is a rich source of high-quality animal products such as milk, meat and eggs. India has emerged as the largest producer of milk with a 24 percent share in Total Milk Production in the world in 2022. India accounts for about 7.25 percent of the Global Egg Production in 2021 and has the largest population of milch animals in the world, with 109.85 million buffaloes, 148.88 million goats and 74.26 million sheeps in 2019. The growth rate recorded was highest for Sheep 14.13 per cent followed by Goat 10.14 per cent and Buffalo 1.06 per cent during 2012 to 2019. Exports of animal products represent a significant contribution to the Indian Agriculture sector. The export of Animal Products includes Buffalo meat, Sheep/ Goat meat, Poultry products, Animal Casings, Milk and Milk products and Honey, etc.
India's exports of Animal Products in 2023-24 was Rs. 37,665.51 Crores/ 4,543.52 USD Millions in, which include the major products like Buffalo Meat (Rs. 31010.10 Crores/ 3740.53 USD Millions), Sheep/ Goat Meat (Rs. 643.55 Crores/ 77.68 USD Millions), Other Meat (Rs. 6.82Crores/ 0.82 USD Million), Poultry Products (Rs. 1530.20 Crores/184.58 USD Millions), Dairy Products (Rs. 2260.94 Crores/ 272.64 USD Millions), Animal Casing (Rs. 399.21Crores/ 48.12 USD Millions), Processed Meat (Rs. 20.55 Crores/ 2.48 USD Millions), Casein (Rs. 150.24 Crores/ 18.22 USD Million), Albumin (Eggs & Milk (Rs. 173.06 Crores/ 20.93 USD Millions)), and Natural Honey (Rs. 1470.84 Crore/ 177.52 USD Millions). The demand for Indian buffalo meat in the international market has sparked a sudden increase in meat exports. Buffalo meat dominated the exports with a contribution of over 82% in total Animal Products export from India in 2023-24. The main markets for Indian Buffalo Meat and other animal products are Malaysia, Vietnam Social Republic, Egypt Arab Republic, Indonesia and U Arab Emts. (Source-DGCIS)
