India is the largest producer of millets in the world. India’s three varieties of millets namely Bajra, Sorghum and Bulkwheat together contribute more than 18 per cent in world production in 2022. India’s Bajra production accounts for 38.4 per cent followed by Sorghum 7.21 per cent and Bulkwheat negligible share in the world production of Millets in 2022. The major millets producing states in India are Rajasthan, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Currently, together these ten states account for around 98 per cent in Millet’s production in India during the period 2023-24 (2ⁿᵈ Advance Estimates). Six states namely Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana accounts for more than 79.6 per cent share in total millet production. Rajasthan contributes 31.3 per cent of the total millet production in India. Multiple varieties of millets such as Bajra (Pearl Millets), Jowar (Sorghum), Ragi (Finger Millet), Canary seeds, Buckwheat and Other Cereal. Pearl millet (Bajra) and Sorghum (Jowar) constitutes the largest share in India’s total production of millets.
